Experience
I have tutored extensively in math and sciences from 1st grade through college. I was part of the peer-tutoring program at my elementary, middle and high school. In college, I tutored children from 7 to 18 as part of a volunteer tutoring program at UC Davis. I currently live and breath neuroscience in Stanford's Ph.D. program, and would love the opportunity to do something different with my time, but that also utilizes my background in math and science. I want to be a tutor because I think it would be a wonderful opportunity to work with current students using techniques I found helpful during my studies. I have always formed mnemonics for myself and tricks to help memorize material, but I have actually found that the best way for material to be learned, and then stay learned, is to really understand the material. I often find that school programs, especially in the math and sciences, teach those subjects in very singular ways that only work for a small percentage of students - I was one of those students that would often get very little out of class sometimes and end up very confused and frustrated. I would go home and re-teach myself the material from the book and online so I understood. Given that, I think I have a lot to share in terms of approaches to teaching this material as I had to go outside the classroom and utilize other learning methods when I was learning the material, and remember how frustrating it was to feel confused the whole class period.

Hobbies
I grew up in the bay area, and have lived here my whole life. I played soccer in high school, along with singing for the choir and playing piano. I founded a theater therapy program while in college for foster youth, stemming from my work tutoring foster students in Davis and my personal interest in theater as an alternative avenue for indirect therapy. My favorite things to do in my free time is hang out at home with my husband and puppy and watch netflix...preferably with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate in hand. This is how I usually unwind from my crazy days at school.
